Give Up Those Burdens

Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.

Psalm 55:22

ON THE PHONE, Beth poured out her feelings to her best friend, Lana. A new believer, Beth struggled to keep her faith intact in the midst of mounting difficulties. “I just don’t know if I can take any more. One huge problem is my brother, Ryan, who has simply gone off the deep end. First, he dropped out of high school. Now he’s living with this girl. I fear that we’ll lose him completely or that God will judge him in some way and really leave him hurting.”

Lana thought about it before answering, then she turned to this passage in today’s reading. “Beth, listen to these words. You have to give all this to the Lord. Just tell him.”

“But I have. And it all just keeps coming back.”

Lana smiled wryly. “That means you keep on giving the problems to him. Over and over till the words stick. His promise is he will take care of you. And Ryan. And that girl. And everyone. He loved you enough to die for you. Do you think if he went that far, he’ll hold back any of the daily things you need?”

“I know. I’m just afraid I’m doing everything wrong.”

“That’s the final promise here: he won’t let you slip and fall. Sure, you feel like you’re making mistake after mistake. But God is working behind the scenes. Just trust him about it. He’ll get you through.”

Beth, with tears in her eyes, nodded.
