Do Not Mock God

Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.

Galatians 6:7-8

WHEN YOU DRIVE through the Midwest, you’ll find lots of different crops growing in the fields. In some areas, you’ll drive by miles of cornfields or fields planted with soybeans or wheat. In the South, you might drive by miles of cotton or tobacco or peanuts or soybeans.

No matter what part of the country you drive through and what crops you see growing, you can be sure of one thing: whatever is growing in that field is what the farmer planted months earlier. That’s the law of nature: what you plant is what you’ll reap.

This is a spiritual law as well. Whatever seeds of priorities, habits, attitudes, and spiritual focus we plant in our lives will eventually become what we harvest. If we are bitter, dishonest, lazy, unbelieving—anything related to our old nature—we will reap a bad harvest.

But when we plant godly habits, positive actions, a spirit of praise, and love for God and others, eventually those seeds will grow. For a while we may not see the evidence of the seeds we plant, but when they start growing, they’ll fill proverbial fields. And the seeds we’ve planted in our lives will become a harvest that will feed us—and others!

Keep planting the good seeds, and look for the great harvest God has promised.
