Capable In God’s Eyes

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is more precious than rubies.

Proverbs 31:10

TO KNOW WHAT it means to be virtuous, all you need to do is review the myriad character qualities found in the inspired writings of the New Testament. To have a spouse who exhibits these behaviors is in itself more valuable and satisfying than possessing any amount of material wealth.

But what does it mean to be capable? The whole of Proverbs 31 fits well with today’s cultural gains for married women. The woman described in this chapter not only manages her husband and children well but also takes advantage of newly won opportunities in the marketplace and has a successful career.

Unfortunately, this brings condemnation for some women who measure themselves by this standard of perfection. They strive to be the very best lover, friend, worker, mother, and charitable giver. They compare themselves with other Christian women who appear better, and they feel they fail at being “capable” in every area; sometimes they burn out. That’s the wrong approach.

First, God promises to equip you for the tasks he is calling you to at various life stages, and he says his burden is light. He’s not calling you to do everything, maybe only a few things well. Second, your spouse hopefully loves you as you are, and though you’re on the road to perfection in Christ, enjoy the journey together through grace.
