Better Than Gold

Better than Gold

[Wisdom said,] “I have riches and honor, as well as enduring wealth and justice. My gifts are better than gold, even the purest gold, my wages better than sterling silver!”

Proverbs 8:18-19

IN THIS PASSAGE, wisdom is personified and speaks of the power of wisdom in a person’s life. When you have wisdom, you learn to solve your problems effectively and honestly. When you develop wisdom, you discover that you conduct the affairs of your life better than most, and often you succeed, not only spiritually but financially and emotionally as well. As you grow in wisdom, God often blesses you with the joy of family, hope in faith, and love from friends and others. Wisdom is one of the most powerful things you can gain in life.

Where do you get it? From God’s Word. While some may disdain the concept, people who have committed its words to memory, applied them in their lives, and obeyed them find that it’s powerful, life changing, and enriching.

An example is Will. He found himself with prodigal children, a failing marriage, and a losing business situation. He went to his pastor, who taught him to memorize God’s Word, and he spent much time reading and studying its wisdom. He began with simple principles about walking with God, being honest, and giving to the church. He followed through on lessons about being a good father and nurturing his wife. In time, it seemed every problem in his life was turned around. The process wasn’t easy, but it was worth the effort.

God’s wisdom is a gift that you, too, have readily available in your Bible. Read it. Digest it. Apply it. And God will fill your heart with the wisdom that brings all other good gifts.
