Whoopie-pie Prayers

Whoopie-Pie Prayers

If you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

Luke 11:13

If you’ve never eaten a Whoopie Pie, imagine a large Oreo cookie made of two soft cakes with fluffy cream in the middle. “It’s believed that Whoopie Pies were first made from leftover cake batter, and Amish legend has it that, when children and even farmers would find the delicious treat in their lunch pail, they’d yell out, ‘Whoopie!’”

Whoopie Pies are typically chocolate cakes with vanilla cream, but many flavor variations for both the cookies and the cream have appeared in recent years. Like all good gifts, a Whoopie Pie is an unexpected yet appreciated treat. It is a reminder of how much the recipient is loved.

Do you feel loved by God? Really loved? Do you anticipate His good gifts in your life? Gifts that will make you stand up and shout, “Whoopie!”? If you’ve had a good-natured and generous parent, it may be easy to see God like this. But maybe you had a parent who was ill-tempered or even stingy. Is it hard to ask for or expect much because you’re afraid you’ll be disappointed?

God generously gives good gifts to His children, yet we must also trust His timing. Even though Amish children would like to find Whoopie Pies in their lunch pails every day, good parents know that special treats should be reserved for specific times. When God doesn’t give us what we desire when we desire it, we must trust His timing. And as we wait, we can also pray with confidence, knowing that God will answer with what is best, when it’s best. Or, as John Newton wrote, “Thou art coming to a King, / large petitions with thee bring; / for His grace and pow’r are such, / none can ever ask too much.”

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for the good gifts You’ve given me. I also thank You for not always answering my prayers as I think You should but as You know is best.
