Truly Humble

God opposes the proud but favors the humble.

James 4:6

When I look at the Amish, it makes sense to me that they are humble. Who could raise a dozen children to love and serve God without having dedicated their lives to Him? Who else could feed and clothe those children with limited resources? Who else could serve not only their families but also their communities? Who else could give generously while stocking their own cupboards from the food they’ve grown and canned or butchered or hunted? The Amish are able to do what they do because they realize they do not have to do it alone. Contrast that with people who willingly take personal credit for their accomplishments. People who want the spotlight. People who don’t want to ask for help.

Humility is learned. We face challenges, and as we step out in faith, God shows up. He does what we cannot do, and we learn to depend on Him more.

Some people tend to think that humility is a weakness, but it’s actually a strength. There will never be a time when we don’t need God’s grace, wisdom, and help. Humility means we realize our need, turn to Him, and walk forward with sure steps. Those who are humble know they have the God of the universe backing them up!

Humble people look to God’s Word for inspiration and answers. They count on God’s gracious provision. They look at impossible situations and say, “Since You, God, are with me, I’m ready to do this thing.” Humble people realize that God has already given us everything we need to succeed in the tasks He has called us to.

John 1:16 says, “Out of His fullness (abundance) we have all received [all had a share and we were all supplied with] one grace after another and spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing and even favor upon favor and gift [heaped] upon gift” (AMP).

Humility is accepting those gifts and putting them to use in daily life. You don’t have to be Amish to do this. You simply have to push back pride and lean dependently on God.

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You that I can turn to You. May my prideful thoughts be squeezed out day by day as I lean on You.
