The Object of Your Desire

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it.

How does God’s Word influence you? Although the Bible doesn’t speak of driving buggies or dressing plain, the beliefs of the Amish have an impact on every part of their lives. They hold diligently to Scripture truths such as 2 Corinthians 6:17: “Come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the LORD. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you.”

Although I have no intention of adopting Amish customs, observing their faith makes me take a look at my own. Do I read God’s Word and strive to live by its principles, or do I simply accept the practices that are the easiest to follow? Do I ever minimize God’s Word in order to fulfill my own desires?

When Satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden, Eve could have stood strong in what she knew God had decreed. Instead, she minimized the importance of God’s Word. In her response to the serpent, she revised what God had said. She questioned His intentions. And she gave Satan room to speak lies.

Each of us must go to God’s Word, read it, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. As we read, we need to inquire, What is God asking of me today? It may not be doing more. It may be loving better, being more present in the moments of our lives, or simply waiting patiently for His guidance. God’s Word is alive and active no matter where we are or in what situation we find ourselves. And the more we read God’s Word, the more God becomes the object of our desire.

Dear heavenly Father, it’s easy to take Your Word, Your directives, and minimize their importance. Help me to live diligently by Your truth, and may You fully become the object of my desire.
