The Good Shepherd

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.

Isaiah 40:11

One of the most wonderful parts of spring is all the baby animals. There is nothing more precious than new colts taking wobbly steps or new lambs hurrying after their mothers. Lambs are usually born in late winter, and by the spring they are running behind their mothers in the pastures. Many Amish farmers raise sheep and goats, which are another way to provide for their families. Like all shepherds, they tenderly care for their lambs. As a mom, I appreciate this picture of a shepherd holding a little lamb close, but my favorite part in Isaiah 40:11 is this: “He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.”

I can’t count the number of times I’ve turned to this verse for inspiration when raising my own children. “Lord, thank You for leading me with my little ones, just as You lead the mother sheep with her lambs.”

The picture here is one of knowing and security. It’s one of provision. To have security, we must trust that Jesus has our best interests in mind. To be provided for, we must stay close to Jesus. To be led, we must recognize His gentle voice: “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me” (John 10:14).

Maybe you do not have children at home, but no matter who you are, you still have influence over others. Whom do you need guidance to lead?

More than that, do you ever have a time when you need to be especially close to God—to feel close to His heart? Trust Jesus. Draw near to Him. Listen to His voice. He is there to carry you in His arms!

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for always being here to lead me. Help me to be a godly influence over those You bring into my life.
