Spring of Your Soul

Forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do.

Isaiah 43:18

For an Amish family, winter means chairs circled in front of the coal-burning stove, reading by lantern light, simple board games, and mending and sewing. The warm spring breezes build excitement as activity moves from inside the warm home to outside in the warm sunshine.

Even though there’s a chill in the air, an Amish family might have lunch on the front porch or on a blanket spread on the new, green grass. Toddlers pluck the first wildflowers, just as the older kids help push vegetable seeds into the soft ground. Once spring arrives, the chill of winter is just a memory. Dark, cold nights are of no concern. The Amish family knows winter will come again, and that makes spring special; they live to enjoy the moment.

Our own lives have seasons of darkness and cold, both emotionally and spiritually, and also seasons of life, light, and joy. No one’s life is always full of sunshine, yet when bright moments arrive, it’s important to celebrate them.

If we’ve faced hard times in the past, we may find worry clouding every moment—even a peaceful one. But worry puts our focus on our circumstances rather than on God. Worry is related to disbelief that our heavenly Father has our good in mind. When we are filled with worry, our minds are busy trying to solve problems and make plans without relying on our Savior. But Jesus told us, “Don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:34).

Do you find yourself worrying about dark days that may be up ahead? Give those worries to God. When spring arrives in your soul, choose to live in the joy of that moment. Live in eagerness and anticipation of what your good God is going to do.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for spring. Thank You for life, light, and moments of joy. I open my hands now and release my worries to You. I thank You greatly that they no longer have to be my concern.
