Open Home, Open Heart

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!

Hebrews 13:2

My friend Joanna called and asked if I wanted to meet her for lunch. I thought about all I’d planned for that day. I had work projects to finish and other things I wanted to check off my to-do list. “Can I catch you next time?” I asked. She was gracious about my request and told me she’d try again.

Unfortunately there wouldn’t be a “next time.” Just a few months later Joanna ended up moving two hours away, and as I drove by her empty house, I wondered what had been so important that I couldn’t take a few hours to catch up with a friend.

In the Amish community it’s not uncommon for a friend to stop by unexpectedly to visit. Amish men and women always have work to do. There is never a moment when everything is checked off their lists, yet they are eager to visit with friends—or even strangers—who stop by. I was amazed when I was visiting Amish country that many people welcomed me into their homes when they didn’t know me. I was thankful they offered me insight into their lives, along with a cup of tea!

When it comes to hospitality, too often I focus on myself, my schedule, and my boundaries rather than on what I can offer to another person. I often forget that sometimes what someone else needs most is my time and a simple cup of coffee or tea.

Mark 9:41 says, “If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded.” The reward we receive is good favor with God, but there are other rewards, too. I always feel refreshed after a long conversation with a friend, and my heart is full with joy.

Life isn’t always about tasks or our own gratification. Yet sometimes when we give to others, we are gratified in ways we don’t expect!

Dear heavenly Father, I’m thankful that You do not put up boundaries when I try to approach You. Help me to open my heart more.
