One in Purpose and Speech

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:1-2

Just as the Amish celebrate Easter Monday, they also set aside Pentecost Monday (Whit Monday) as a time for family togetherness or family visiting. The observation of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the believers ten days after Jesus’ ascension, comes the seventh Sunday after Easter. On Pentecost, 120 of Jesus’ disciples received the Holy Spirit. They had gathered together and waited on God, and the Holy Spirit came to them and worked through them powerfully. Experiencing the Holy Spirit in our lives isn’t just something that happened two thousand years ago but something that can have an impact on our lives today.

Acts 5:32 says, “We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.” How did the disciples obey? They came together, and they waited in humility.

Thousands of years before Pentecost another group of people gathered. Genesis speaks about the tower of Babel. “They said, ‘Come, let’s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world’” (Genesis 11:4).

In Genesis, the men and women sought their own fame. In Acts, they waited in unity and in obedience to God. In Genesis, the language was confused and the people were scattered. In Acts, they joined together, they could understand each other, and the world was changed.

Can you plan a time for family visiting soon? Do you have an opportunity to gather with others to seek God? If not, can you make one? When you do, God will be lifted up, and His Holy Spirit will bring you and others together and help you understand one another in new ways!

Dear heavenly Father, show me ways that I can join with others to lift You up. May humility—not pride—guide my conversation whenever I gather with those You love.
