Looking Forward To A Good Future
Looking Forward to a Good Future
History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.
Ecclesiastes 1:9
Have you ever heard the saying that everything old is new again? Old fashions are “retro.” Old furniture is “repurposed.” Old skills, such as knitting, crocheting, and embroidery, are embraced by a new generation. And as Amish move into new parts of the country, old manners of living are resurrected. Here is a report from visitors to a new Amish settlement in Unity, Maine.
The Community Market is still under construction and is located at the base of what looks like the central point of Community activity and endeavors and the large fields look like they grew a lot of product this past growing season.
There was a lot of activity going on outside with several Amish men using a chainsaw to cut ice from a pond and using the horses and buggies to haul it off somewhere. There was an elderly woman there who was watching this going on and said pretty loudly, “. . . I haven’t seen that done in about 70 years.”
God has a habit of allowing society to run in cycles. Ecclesiastes 3:15 says, “What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has happened before, because God makes the same things happen over and over again.”
What can we expect to see in our spiritual lives? “‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams’” (Acts 2:17).
We may look at the Amish lifestyle and think, I wish we could return to a simpler life. We may look at the ungodliness of the world and think, I wish we had the values of the past. But with God, the past is only a glimpse into the future. Young men and women are being raised to know God personally, and the future will be better for it. Trust God for that!
Dear heavenly Father, I’m thankful that You hold the past, present, and future in Your hands. I thank You that the “good old days” can be our future when we turn to You.
