Like Apples of Gold

Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a ruling rightly given.

Proverbs 25:11 (NIV)

I have received many gifts in my life. Some were wrapped in newsprint. Others in fine papers and ribbons. Some gifts were simple and handmade, but none have been as cherished as encouraging words. I can still remember my grandmother saying, “What a beautiful picture. When you grow up, you can design your own line of greeting cards.” I remember tips shared by my favorite writing mentor. I still think of his wisdom years later when I sit down to write. Encouraging words—wise words—not only have an impact on a moment but also can influence a lifetime. The Amish often use proverbs to share messages and lessons that they want their children to carry with them for life:

These time-tested proverbs—such as “God has two dwellings, one in heaven and the other in a meek and thankful heart” or “You can’t keep trouble from coming, but you needn’t give it a chair to sit on” or “Many things have been opened by mistake, but none so frequently as the mouth”—become like small lights along a path, guiding a child (adults too) toward wise behavior and choices. They have a way of clearing away the gray fog, distilling an issue down to black or white clarity, simplifying the decision. And helping a child remember simple but piercing wisdom.

What helpful advice have you been given? Pass it on. What encouragement have you received? Think about how you can encourage someone else.

Take time to write a note to someone whose words have made a positive difference in your life. He or she will appreciate knowing how your life was influenced by those comments.

Finally, share God’s Word with others. Luke 1:37 says, “No word from God shall be void of power” (ASV). The kind, loving, wise words we speak into the lives of others have some impact, but when we share God’s Word, it goes forth with greater power and purpose.

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for all the people in my life who have shared wisdom and pointed me to You. Thank You for Your good and powerful Word, which will never fail to accomplish Your purpose.
