Joy Breaks

Joy Breaks

We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the LORD has done for them.”

Psalm 126:2

With autumn comes a list of things that need to be done before the first snow falls and the ground freezes. There is harvesting, canning, and tilling of the garden. There is also the raking of leaves. But even with all the work, the Amish make sure to take time for a little fun. Amish children rake leaves, but they also enjoy jumping into the piles. Laughter carries through the air, and more raking and jumping follow.

Even with the urgency of trying to get so many tasks done, there is always time for laughter. As Ecclesiastes 3:4 says, “A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.” And sometimes this dancing takes place among a pile of leaves! What good is having a dozen children if there aren’t a dozen smiles once in a while?

Have you taken time recently to play in the leaves, to laugh, to let God’s joy bubble from your lips? If not, then don’t be surprised if no one wants to hear about the faith that you have to share.

I remember when I was far from God. I thought about my friends and their lack of joy. As they pursued their own self-interests, there was always drama, problems, and tears. Then I thought about my mom’s Christian friends. They had kind things to say. They laughed often. As I compared the two groups, I realized that I wanted the joy my mom’s friends had. When I accepted Jesus’ salvation, the first glimmer of joy filled my heart, and it has continued to grow over the years!

When those around us see our laughter and our joy, they, too, will say, “What amazing things the LORD has done for them” (Psalm 126:2). Maybe they will start to seek the Lord for themselves. Too often we feel guilty for not accomplishing the daily tasks on our to-do lists, but sharing joy is something that can make a difference in eternity!

Dear heavenly Father, remind me again of all the wonderful things You have done so that my heart is filled with joy!
