Good Friday Prayer

You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Amish men are off work on Kaofreidawk (Good Friday). It’s a quiet day to remember Jesus’ hours on the cross. No work is done that day, and the time is given to fasting and prayer. A common Good Friday prayer includes this passage: “Oh Jesus, Thou eternal good, who hast on this good, quiet Friday held still before Thy Father, and for my sake hast obediently born His wrath even unto death, grant that I also today may observe this fitting, good, quiet Friday with suitable thoughts and quiet devotion. Yea, that I might keep, observe, Thy great day of sacrifice and through true faith make myself partaker of Thy sacrifice and great payment, atonement.”

Good Friday is a time to remember—to remember Christ’s sacrifice and to remember that we are bought with a price. We don’t belong to ourselves. Second Corinthians 6:16 says, “We are the temple of the living God. As God said: ‘I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.’”

When was that last time you remembered all that Jesus has done for you? When you remembered that you belong to God? When was the last time you took time to be quiet? To be still? You might not have the day off work on Good Friday, but could you carve out time to sit quietly before God, to consider what Christ has done?

In our busy lives it’s hard to sit still. It’s hard to take time to remember. But if we don’t take time to remember, we won’t appreciate all that’s been given. Then we’ll walk through life as if Jesus should appreciate all we’re doing for Him instead of the other way around.

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You for the Lord Jesus, whose perfect obedience saved my soul. Take my mind and heart to the foot of the cross. Help me never to take such a costly gift for granted.
