From Him, through Him, in Him

Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.

Psalm 90:1-2

What did your ancestors believe about God? Do you know? The Amish do. They have a Confession of Faith that was written and adopted at a peace convention held in the Dutch city of Dordrecht on April 21, 1632:

Whereas it is declared that “without faith it is impossible to please him [God]” (Heb 11:6), and that “he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him,” therefore we confess with the mouth, and believe with the heart, together with all the pious, according to the Holy Scriptures, that there is one eternal, almighty, and incomprehensible God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and none more and none other, before whom no God existed, neither will exist after Him. For from Him, through Him, and in Him are all things. To Him be blessing, praise, and honor, for ever and ever.

“From Him, through Him, and in Him.” It’s hard to wrap our minds around that, and the more we learn of God, the harder it becomes. It’s like explaining the process of writing a book to my children. When they are preschoolers, they trust that when Mom types on a computer, a book comes out of it. The older they get, the more they understand the process, but they also realize the process is more complex than they thought.

Have you ever felt that way—that the more you learn about God and His Word, the more you realize how much you don’t know? We don’t need to understand everything about God. We simply need to put our faith in the fact that He is.

What concerns are heavy on your heart? Write those things down, and then take a closer look at them. Let peace come when you realize the answers are from Him, through Him, and in Him.

Dear heavenly Father, may my heart be open to hear and to embrace the truths shared by past generations.
