What memories do you have of mealtimes when you were growing up? When I was younger, my family sat around the dinner table, but by the time I was school age, we usually ate in front of the television.

An Amish family gathers around the dining room or kitchen table, and everyone grows quiet. Before the food is served, Dad bows his head in silent prayer. After a minute, he clears his throat, signaling that the prayer is over. Only then are platters of meat or a casserole, potatoes, vegetables, and salad passed. Dinner isn’t the only time Amish families gather for the meal. Whoever is home gathers in similar fashion for breakfast and lunch.

Everyone—children included—is expected to finish all the food on their plates. They are given enough to satisfy, and sometimes seconds are available. There is usually more eating than talking.

Many meals are served up in an Amish home, but one thing that’s always served up is love. This reminds me of the banquet table we’ll have in heaven someday. Matthew 8:11 talks about this very thing: “I tell you this, that many Gentiles will come from all over the world—from east and west—and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven.” In heaven we will have no physical need for food; we’ll gather for fellowship and celebration.

In our busy world, coming together to eat is a reminder that our need is great. Gathering for a meal also reminds us that we’re not alone. Tonight, when you gather with your family or with friends, express what it means to you to sit down with the people who fill your heart and life. And if you’re single, then take time to meet for meals with others. It’s around the table that our souls—as well as our bodies—are fed.

Dear heavenly Father, I cannot wait for the day when I’m gathered with You and Your family around Your banquet table to celebrate and rejoice for eternity. Thank You for all Your provisions, Lord!
