Be Rich

A person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.

Luke 12:21

Fifty years ago it would have been rare for Amish people to enter a grocery store. Even today the majority of what they fill their shelves and cellars with comes from their gardens, from canning and butchering. Even when Amish people do go to the store, they most likely do not fill their carts as we do. What they do buy is simple and cheap, but if you ask them, they would say they consider themselves blessed. In fact here is a note from an Amishman titled “I Am Rich.”

For real excitement on the farm, there’s nothing like gathering in the first eggs from a flock of chickens you’ve raised from baby chicks. Nor is there anything as tasty as vegetables you’ve hoed and cultivated till you’re hot and tired. When we stop to consider, it’s nothing short of a miracle when we behold how much God provides for us to eat, all from one little dried-up dead-looking seed.

No, we have no so-called modern conveniences, but we are blessed with an abundance of life’s necessities. We don’t have an over-flowing grocery cart, or beautiful clothes or a big bank account to fall back on.

But I do have a family and friends, and many people I meet on life’s highway. I have good eyesight, a healthy mind and body. I AM RICH.

May I remember to be as rich with gratitude as I am rich with gifts which God has bestowed upon me.

When do you feel rich? When you can fill a grocery cart or shop in the best stores for the best clothes? Or, like the writer of the note above, do you see your family, friends, health, and relationship with God as your true riches?

Proverbs 13:7 says, “Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor.” You can pretend to be anything you like, but real riches can’t be tossed into a grocery cart and paid for. They come only from God.

Dear heavenly Father, thank You for all that I have that cannot be bought. Thank You for paying the price so that I am able to receive what I have.
