A Pretty Necklace

My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will refresh your soul. They are like jewels on a necklace.

What would you say are the top qualities of a good teacher? For the Amish the list is simple: the ability to teach, commitment to the Amish faith, and common sense. Teaching an Amish student means focusing on the basics, and the Amish schools are efficient in doing just that.

The curriculum includes reading, arithmetic, spelling, grammar, penmanship, history, and some geography. Classes are conducted in English, and both English and German are taught. Parents want children to learn to read German so that they can understand religious writings, many of which are recorded in formal German. Science and sex education are missing in the curriculum as are other typical trappings of public schools—sports, dances, cafeterias, clubs, bands, choruses, computers, television, guidance counselors, principals, and college recruiters.

Amish teachers, themselves trained in Amish schools, are not required to be certified in most states. The brightest and best of Amish scholars, they return to the classroom to teach, often in their late teens and early twenties. Amish school directors select them for their ability to teach and for their commitment to Amish values. . . . Periodic meetings with other teachers, a monthly teachers magazine, Blackboard Bulletin, and ample common sense prepare them for the task.

We try to give our attention to so much in our lives that sometimes we forget that only a few things are really needed. We want to prepare ourselves and any children we may have for everything they may face in the world, but when it comes down to it, common sense and discernment go a long way.

The Amish don’t wear jewelry, but their common sense is like a pretty necklace. Jewels are beautiful and special, and those who have common sense are mature, calm, and attractive in a way that no real diamonds can show off.

Dear heavenly Father, I know that common sense comes from Your Word. As I seek You, may my life be attractive to those in a watching world.
