A Masterpiece

A Masterpiece

You made me; you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your commands.

Psalm 119:73

As the winter winds begin to blow, it’s the perfect time to curl up under a cozy quilt. Amish quilts have a timeless quality and are highly valued for their workmanship.

We know the Amish by their quilts. The women inside an Amish community often shared piecing and quilting patterns with each other. Sometimes patterns would be shared between women from different communities. In this way designs spread through Amish communities, across the United States.

Amish quilts are most often pieced and the designs are usually simple. Their beauty comes from the way each individual quilter used color in her quilts. The solid fabrics in these quilts are plain—free from pattern. But solid fabrics don’t have to be dull or quiet. Many Amish quilts are made from rich, bright, wonderful colors. . . . In many cases, if you take these quilts out of context, they look very modern. The piecing designs in Amish quilts do not have a dated look; we still use them today. Solid fabrics don’t look dated the way a very old print does.

The Amish never intended for their quilts to be timeless. For decades they’ve made quilts to keep their families warm, and now they are collected and appreciated far beyond Amish communities.

Like an Amish quilt, we are each uniquely created and designed. But the One who designed us is infinitely wise. He knows His intentions for us, and they are often not what we might expect. We are fashioned, fitted, shaped, and formed. We are pieced together: “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it” (Psalm 139:13-14).

It feels good when others value and appreciate you, but the One who created you values and appreciates you so much more. God created you to be timeless. How amazing is that!

Dear heavenly Father, I thank You that in Your sight, I’m a masterpiece. Help me to understand my unique design more than I ever have before.
