Dear God, If there are so many missionaries, why are so many people still not Christians?

You’re right. There are thousands of missionaries in this world—actually, hundreds of thousands. There are missionaries in almost all nations of the world, including the United States. Missionaries may move to somewhere far away, but sometimes people are missionaries in their own countries. For example, there are Americans who are missionaries to Americans, and there are Korean missionaries reaching out to people in Korea.

Even with all the missionaries in the world, not everyone who hears the Good News decides to become a Christian. In the book of Joshua, chapter 24, Joshua tells the people that they must choose whom they will serve. Some people choose to serve God, but other people choose to serve idols or even themselves! You can’t make someone decide to be a Christian. That is between the individual and God. But they have to hear the Good News in order to choose.

That is where you and I and all missionaries come in.

Some missionaries are called to move away, but others are missionaries right in their own schools and neighborhoods. Did you realize that, in a way, you are a missionary too? A “missionary” is simply a person who has a mission, or a goal. Our mission as Christians is to share the Good News with those who need to hear it.

Just remember—it’s your privilege to tell people about Jesus, and it’s their choice how to respond.
