Dear God, Do I have to dress in fashion?

Whether we like it or not, the clothes we wear say a lot about us—if we are modest or not, if we are daring or cautious, if we like attention or just standing in the background. People learn about us by what we are wearing before we even speak a word.

Why does that happen? Most people don’t mean anything bad by learning about you through what you wear. After all, you choose your clothes, so your clothes give clues about who you are. Are you artsy? Sporty? Preppy? A one-of-a-kind fashionista? People want to get to know you better, and one way to do that is just to look at you. They aren’t judging you; they’re just getting to know you.

But some people only like people who seem rich or more fashionable because of what they wear. In the Bible, the Lord tells us that people who are nicer to those with better clothes or jewelry are making decisions using evil motives. Yes—evil! Pretty intense, huh?

If what you choose to wear says something you want people to know about you, wear it with pride! It doesn’t matter if it isn’t expensive or popular. No designer creates the same outfit over and over again; God created you to be individual, unique, and different from others. No matter what you wear, people will find out much more as they spend time with the real you, inside your heart and mind. The ones who judge you based only on your clothes aren’t people you want to try to please.
