God’s Possibilities

IN WORD How easily we forget this! Whether the issue is salvation for those who are far from God, as in this passage, or some other matter of faith, the principle is the same: All things are possible with God.

We often limit our vision to what we know to be within the realm of possibility—not as God defines possibility, but as we define it. We set ambitious—but realistic—goals. We pray for impressive—but conceivable—miracles. We hope for divine—but plausible—resolutions to our problems. But we forget and need to hear it again: All things are possible with God.

Our Bible is full of impossible situations. A nation camped at the edge of a sea with a hostile army behind them. An inexperienced band of fighters faced an impenetrable, walled city. A shepherd boy stood before an armed and angry giant. A worshiper faced a lion’s den. “Dry bones” rotted in a valley. And our only hope of salvation lay in a sealed tomb.

IN DEED Have you reached a dead end? Is it more dire than anything God has dealt with before? Is He confounded by your hopeless situation? We can take comfort in His many promises. “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear” (Isaiah 59:1). “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind; is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me” (Psalm 50:15).

God does not promise to grant us everything on our agenda, but He does promise to meet real needs and to support real ministry in response to real faith. His track record is impressive. Never have His purposes been thwarted by circumstances too demanding. Never has His strength fallen short of the need. This is the promise we have in our Savior: All things are possible with God.
