Be Wise

IN WORD Jesus is coming again. He said so repeatedly, and His followers throughout history have believed it. But two thousand years after He said He would come, He still tarries. And how we live today reflects what we think about that.

Many Christians believe that Jesus is coming again but do not live with the urgency that indicates that it is a real belief. But there is a reason Jesus told His disciples to be ready and then waited two thousand years. He intends for us to live every day with an eternal perspective, sowing seeds that will bear everlasting fruit. He wants us to be single-minded in our service, preparing His household in the same way we would if He were standing beside us telling us what to do. He sees who has taken His interests to heart and who has not. Those who love Him serve Him well. Those who give Him mere lip service will get up and act busy when He comes through the door.

IN DEED Does Jesus’ return guide your life today? Or is His return on the back burner, a distant thought while you live out the demands of the present? Be careful of the answer. According to Jesus, it’s the difference between being wise and foolish.

Jesus’ encouragement to be prepared contains some of the most sobering words in the Bible. The alternative to being ready is extremely harsh treatment from the Master. Faithful and wise managers have nothing to fear, but those who do not live according to the Master’s principles are judged severely—beaten and cut up, in fact—and assigned a place with the unbelievers. Why? Because disobedience is unbelief.

Be dressed and be ready. Keep the lamps burning. Watch for the Master’s return and be wise. He is coming.
