Zechariah 4:1–5:11; Revelation 14:1-20; Psalm 142:1-7; Proverbs 30:21-23

AS WE CONTINUE to move through Zechariah, it’s difficult to miss the similarities in style between this Old Testament book and Revelation. Apocalyptic literature has a distinctive and highly symbolic tone, as we’ve previously mentioned. As you read from both Old and New Testaments, consider what you are viewing as symbolic and what you are taking literally. And consider why. These considerations are part of the process of interpreting the genre. Within the imagery, we encountered a very famous passage today: “It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies” (Zechariah 4:6).

While we’re reading the highly visual and symbolic writings —and for that matter, while we’re doing anything —this verse holds true. Committing it to memory and carrying it with us into the next couple days will be an anchor for us as we’re overrun with merriment and activity.

Our reading from Psalms also gave us a good reminder and reset for the coming days. “You are my place of refuge. You are all I really want in life” (Psalm 142:5). At this time of year, it seems that everyone has secret hopes for what they want for Christmas. Presents are probably under the tree, hidden by colorful wrapping paper. Although these gifts may indeed make us happy, or even tighten the bonds of endearment, we would do well to remember the posture of this psalm. The giving and receiving of gifts is certainly a rich and meaningful tradition. But no matter what reveals itself after the paper is torn, it won’t be able to be our place of refuge.

“When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn,” we’re reminded (Psalm 142:3). Certainly, many things can overwhelm us at this time of year. If we first remember that God alone knows the way we should go and second turn to Him as our true place of refuge, then we will reorient our heart’s posture to what is true. Union with God is the gift that we really want.

MEDITATION:

They have kept themselves as pure as virgins, following the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among the people on the earth as a special offering to God and to the Lamb. They have told no lies; they are without blame.
