1 Kings 7:1-51; Acts 7:30-50; Psalm 128:1-6; Proverbs 16:31-33

OUR READING FROM Psalms today is a perfect example of the way something profound happens when a blessing is spoken over us. This was true in biblical times and continues today in traditions like the benediction spoken at the end of a worship service in many churches around the world. Words of affirmation spoken over us reorient our hearts. Slow down and imagine that you aren’t reading, but that this is being spoken over you:

How joyful are those who fear the LORD —all who follow his ways! You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be! Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table. That is the LORD’s blessing for those who fear him.

May the LORD continually bless you from Zion. May you see Jerusalem prosper as long as you live. May you live to enjoy your grandchildren. May Israel have peace!

Isn’t it amazing how the Bible can speak such encouragement and life over us if we’re paying attention? These words were spoken over people either as they entered the Temple or departed from it. They have been pronounced as a blessing for thousands of years. Now they are being spoken over you today. Remember this blessing as you move into your day.

Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.
