1 Kings 1:1-53; Acts 4:1-37; Psalm 124:1-8; Proverbs 16:24

TODAY WE BEGAN the book of 1 Kings, and in many ways, we are simply continuing the story forward from the books of Samuel —with some unique nuances. As with other books in the Bible, the books of Kings were broken into two parts for ease. They share the same history and mimic, in a lot of ways, the books of 1 and 2 Chronicles that will follow. The same point in history is being observed from two vantage points. In the books of Kings, more prominence will be given to the royals and their interaction with some of the key prophetic voices, whereas in the books of Chronicles, the priestly and Levitical offices will offer their perspective on the same time period.

As we begin, we’ll witness the end of King David’s reign and the dramatic ascension of his son Solomon to the throne. Solomon will guide Israel into peace and abundance as they faithfully worship the Lord. We’ll witness the First Temple erected as worship and praise take an iconic place in Hebrew culture. Solomon will lead Israel into its finest hour. Unfortunately, we’ll also begin to observe things unraveling as Solomon approaches the end of his life and reign.

After Solomon’s death, Israel will divide into two factions. These will be known as the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. The stories of the prophets Elijah and Elisha will figure prominently, and finally, we’ll watch military overthrow come to the land as these kingdoms fall. Thankfully, all will not be lost. All is never lost when God’s people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways.

As with all the Bible, we’ll find ourselves in these pages. Like the children of Israel, we often find ourselves in the ebb and flow with God. The books of Kings show us both outcomes —when we’re faithful and when we’re not. But one thing remains true: God is always faithful.
