Day 115

Day 115

Judges 4:1–5:31; Luke 22:35-53; Psalm 94:1-23; Proverbs 14:3-4

IN JUDGES TODAY, we met Israel’s only female judge —Deborah —and learned of her leadership and triumph over Hazor’s armies. We also briefly met Jael —another woman who was strong and unflinching. Deborah’s victory song rounded out our reading from the Old Testament. In ancient Israel, such songs inspired praise for God and called attention to His role in the victory.

In Luke’s Gospel, we continued to follow the passion narrative of Jesus, as we witnessed His prayers in the garden of Gethsemane and His arrest.

Our reading from Proverbs left us two pieces of advice to consider. Proverbs 14:3 told us that proud talk can become its own punishment. Let’s remember that only a few days ago, we read of Joshua telling the children of Israel that their words would serve as witnesses against them, and today, we found the same sentiment in Proverbs. Perhaps it’s time to be a little more vigilant in what we say.

Our reading from Proverbs 14:4 told us that our stable will stay clean provided there are no oxen in it, but that if we want a bountiful harvest, we’ll need a strong ox. Having a strong ox brings along with it mess and maintenance —the poo isn’t going to shovel itself. What we’re fundamentally being taught in this proverb is that harvest in our lives requires all the steps of planting and nurturing —and all the mess and maintenance of bringing it into the storehouse.

The spiritual implications are clear. Take a good look at the areas in your life you are cultivating, and understand that the messiness is part of the process. Maintaining our relationship with God is the only way we will ever reap the bountiful fruit of the Spirit in our lives.

MEDITATION:

I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
