When God Closes A Door

When God Closes a Door

Ruth

Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.

—Acts 16:6–7

I have always prided myself on the principle of “patience + perseverance = success.” I am not a quitter. And for most situations, there is wisdom in sticking it out and seeing something through.

But there is another principle in the Bible that I find myself wrestling with often. The God who calls us to patiently endure is also the God who closes doors. He is the One who redirects our plans, frustrates our efforts, and shows us there is something better if we would only trust Him.

It’s comforting to know that even the apostles, those early followers of Jesus sent out to preach the good news, had a difficult time discerning and understanding God’s will. A great example of this is found in Acts 16. Paul and his companions were setting out on another missionary journey to take the good news of God’s love to new and different territories. It was clearly an open door.

But soon after embarking on this journey, we’re told in verses 6–7 that God closed some doors. The Holy Spirit kept them from traveling toward an opportunity in Asia and would not allow them to enter Bithynia either. We’re not told what Paul’s response was, but we can imagine he was likely confused, disappointed, or even discouraged. Yet several verses later, we see that God was opening a different door. There was a better opportunity. In God’s wisdom and timing, He was redirecting Paul’s plans.

Has God closed a door for you? Is there something you set out to do or accomplish that you are now beginning to sense may be a closed door? Don’t be discouraged. Don’t give up. As you continue to pray for God’s wisdom and direction, remember that God is faithful to open a new door.

His plans and purposes always prevail. And when they do, we see that what He had in mind is always better!

Father, I believe and trust that You are sovereign, in control, and directing my steps. Give me wisdom to see when to press on and when to humbly move in a new direction. Guard my heart from growing frustrated, and help me trust You even when Your plans are different from mine. In Jesus’ name, amen.

How do you know when to persevere and when to acknowledge a closed door?

How have you seen God open a new door when He closes another door?
