Standing In Awe
Standing in Awe
Ruth
Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him.
—Psalm 33:8
Have you ever watched someone do what seems impossible and found yourself in awe? Our family loves the Olympics. During the last Winter Olympics, we watched several sports we don’t typically watch, including the luge. Some have described this sport as sledding down an icy mountain at ninety miles per hour. Not exactly my idea of fun, but we were amazed at how people had learned this sport. We marveled at their ability to remain positioned on their sled while winding down an icy track at extremely high speeds. You could say we were in awe.
What is awe? Awe is when we are overcome with a sense of wonder, reverent fear, and appreciation. I often question, with our busy and active lives, if we have lost our sense of awe. In particular, awe of God. We are easily entertained, but are we easily enthralled by God?
When I read the Bible, I am reminded that when people truly encountered the power and presence of God, they couldn’t help but be moved. They were filled with wonder. Awestruck. Worship was the only rightful response.
If we are in Christ, to fear God, as mentioned in Psalm 33:8, means to esteem Him. It is to hold Him up and see Him for who He really is. To fear God is to treasure Him. To stand in awe of Him.
With all that life throws at us, we can quickly become consumed, indifferent to the presence and power of God around us. It is so easy to get distracted. Overwhelmed with busyness, work, family, and kids’ activities. One of the greatest risks to us in crazy and chaotic seasons is to have an underwhelmed soul.
Have you lost your sense of awe? Are you feeling underwhelmed? Slow down today. Be still. Get away to a quiet place. Don’t just read God’s Word; meditate on the truth and promises of God. Think deeply about all Jesus has done, is doing, and will do someday. Don’t let your soul be underwhelmed. Stay in worship until God meets you, bringing awe that overwhelms and settles your soul.
I worship You, Lord. You alone are worthy of praise. Quiet my soul today. Fix my eyes on You. Show me the wonders of Your love. Satisfy and strengthen my soul today with Your power and presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Describe a time when you were in awe of God.
What is one way you can begin slowing down to pay attention to who God is?
