Reading It Again

Reading It Again

Ruth

Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands give me delight.

—Psalm 119:143

A few years ago during a weekend retreat, a youth leader wrote our daughter a special note. Filled with words of encouragement and truth, it was a breath of fresh air for our daughter. She read it and reread it countless times, hanging on every word.

On our drive home from the weekend retreat, I looked in the rear-view mirror to find my daughter reading the note . . . again! “You’re reading it again?” I asked her. “Yes, Mom,” she responded. “I need to because I don’t remember everything she said.”

As we continued our drive home that Sunday night, it hit me that God’s Word is like that. We too need to be reminded of what it says. We read it and read it again. We keep coming back to it over and over because we need the reminder of who God is and who we are.

God is good and faithful. He really has spoken. He loves us. He is with us. He has given His Word as a source of great strength, wisdom, and hope. I need it today just as much as I did when I first received it.

When life gets hard or stressful, it’s so tempting to turn elsewhere. To forget God’s truth. But every other source leaves us empty, never satisfying our souls. Think for a moment of what the Bible says about itself:

The Bible is pure (Psalm 19:8 ESV).

It is a guide for life (Psalm 119:105).

God’s Word feeds and nourishes our souls (Jeremiah 15:16).

It changes us (Hebrews 4:12).

The Bible is true (John 17:17 and 2 Timothy 3:16).

It purifies us from sin (Ephesians 5:26).

The Bible is worth reading again and again. God wants to remind you of His love. To encourage you with His promises. To guide you with His truth. It’s easy to forget, so we need to keep coming back to the God who reminds us in the most perfect way.

Father, I praise You because You have spoken. You have given me Your Word. Your truth and promises are a delight to me. They bring me joy and hope. Help me reflect deeply on who You are. Teach me to treasure all You have done for me in Christ. I need the reminder as much today as when I first began to walk with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What keeps you from reading God’s Word more often?

What is one way you can begin making God’s Word more of a priority in your life?
