Opening The Window

Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

One night in Fiji, Todd and Joe and Aaron and I talked about the things we want to do in our lives. That was a season when it was kind of all open, waiting to be re-created, each on the cusp of something, but we didn’t know what. So we talked about how God made each of us, what we’re good at, what we’re not, what we might do, what we never will.

Sometimes we get so tangled up in our own perceptions of ourselves that we lose perspective, seeing only our failures and bad habits. In difficult seasons, it’s almost impossible to remember that feeling of being great at something or being proud of yourself.

We reminded one another that night, and we dreamed on behalf of one another. Left to our own devices, we sometimes choose the most locked up, dark versions of the story, but a good friend turns on the lights, opens the window, and reminds us that there are a whole lot of ways to tell the same story.
