Every Day

Blessed is the one . . . whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

My dad talks about how every Christian needs to spend time alone with God every day, praying, listening, reading the Bible, letting ourselves be reminded that we are God’s creation, God’s children. God wants his people to trust him daily, to need him and follow him every morning with new faith.

I couldn’t live well without regularly reading God’s word. It’s often packaged like a commentary book, with footnotes and indexes and really tiny type. But parts of it are more like a crime novel or a gothic tale of love, belief, and betrayal—stories about family, fear, animals, and anger, about blood, bones, midwives, frogs, and fires, about bread, fish, and storms. At the center of it, we have the story of a baby, a star, of angels and shepherds. We have the story of who that baby grew up to be, how he sacrificed for us, and how he wants to transform us.
