Day 3: When God Seems Silent

Day 3: When God Seems Silent

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?” Psalm 22:1 (NIV)

We’ve all had those days, haven’t we? You sit down for your quiet time, open your Bible, bow your head in prayer – and it feels like you’re just talking to the floor. God seems silent, distant, unreachable. You might feel a bit like David in our Scripture for today, crying out to a God who feels absent.

David wasn’t the last one to say these words. In fact, a thousand years later, the Son of God himself quotes Psalm 22:1 as he hangs dying on the cross. This was no accident! In that moment as Jesus cried “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46 NIV), he was connecting himself to the ancient king David, his ancestor, through whose line the one true King was promised to come.

In Jesus, we see the pivotal act of love and sacrifice that changed our relationship with the Father. We were once outsiders, distanced from the presence of God within the Temple’s inner sanctuary, the Holy of Holies. This sacred place was a divine throne room, only accessible to the High Priest once a year on the Day of Atonement. However, when Jesus died and gave up his spirit, the long and heavy curtain shielding the Holy of Holies split in two! This was not a simple tear; it was a top-to-bottom rending, a sign of divine intervention. It signified a monumental shift in our relationship with God.

From that point on, reconciliation with God became accessible to anyone who puts their faith in Jesus, the promised King from David’s line. Jesus’ sacrifice had cleared a path to the Father’s presence, which means we no longer have to question whether God hears us, even when it feels like he is silent.

But how do we keep faith when God seems far off? Here are a few thoughts:

  • Be honest with God: Share your feelings with him. Remember David’s raw honesty in the Psalms.
  • Seek fellowship: Connect with a trusted friend or mentor. Sharing your struggle can provide comfort and perspective.
  • Stay consistent: Even if it feels like you’re going through the motions, keep up your spiritual disciplines. These practices ground us in truth when our feelings are deceitful.

Above all else, remember Jesus. It was in this dark hour, as Jesus cried out in abandoned anguish, that God’s grand plan of redemption was unfolding. Jesus’ moment of forsakenness led to our eternal acceptance, and now we never have to be away from him again!

Application:

As you go through today, hold onto the hope that this season of silence is just that – a season. It does not define your relationship with God or his love for you. God is still there, working in ways we may not always perceive.
