The Night Sky

The Night Sky

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?

Psalm 8:3-4

Have you ever gone out at night and gazed up at a sky filled with stars? They seem far away and majestic. If you looked closely, you may have been able to pick out some of the constellations. Constellations are groups of stars that make a picture in the sky. They are named after animals, mythological characters, people, or objects. Constellations are located in a certain section of the night sky. You can see different constellations as the earth turns and at different times during different seasons of the year. Of course, if you lived on the equator, you’d actually be able to see all the constellations during the year. But if you lived at the North or South Pole, you’d only be able to see the ones right above you.

Perhaps David was out with his sheep when he gazed into the night sky filled with its bright points of light and was filled with awe and wonder. Perhaps the moon was full—or maybe just a crescent—far above David. The moon and stars were a silent witness to God’s power. David wondered why a God great enough to create the stars and moon would care about people.

Since David’s time, man has walked on the moon, rockets have been sent into space, and more has been discovered about the moon and stars. But we still gaze at the night sky in awe. The stars still point to a mighty creator. And best of all, that Creator knows you personally. He cares about you.

Think about it—the same God who created the moon and stars cares about what kind of day you are having. He wants you to spend time with him and know him personally. He watches over you day and night, every day of your life.

Go outside and gaze at the night sky the next time it’s filled with stars. Read Psalm 8 and Psalm 19. Then write your own psalm about God. It doesn’t matter if it sounds perfect as long as it’s from your heart to God.
