When Anxiety Takes Over
When Anxiety Takes Over
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” (Psalm 94:19, NIV)
“When I said, ‘My foot is slipping,’ your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.” (Psalm 94:18, NIV)
“Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.” (Psalm 94:17, NIV)
Have you ever felt your heart beating so loudly that it seemed it had moved from your chest to your throat? I had fears in my head that felt like a Midwest Tornado had popped up out of nowhere.
The trigger? My laptop screen cracked. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it because I know how small that sounds. My work depends on it, and in the moment, it felt like my whole life depended on it.
If you’ve ever had a “small” thing flip that switch in you, you understand. Anxiety doesn’t always wait for a good reason to attack. It just storms the gates.
Sometimes anxiety doesn’t just come for a visit, but it invades, occupying your entire mind. Whether it’s health concerns keeping you awake, replaying symptoms and worst-case scenarios, or financial pressure that has you checking your bank account over and over again. Whatever sparks it, anxiety seizes your thoughts and stakes a claim on your peace. The enemy’s tactic here is relentless: Worry has a hold on you, and it will never let go.
Psalm 94 explains that wicked forces surround the writer. His circumstances are tricky, and he has the very real sense that his foot is slipping. Calm is nowhere to be found; he’s writing from the middle of warfare. But amidst the battle, he exclaims: “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”
This verse does not deny the anxiety or pretend that a believer should be immune to it. This verse declares that God’s consolation is stronger. His comfort doesn’t just take the edge off; it breaks through the enemy’s line and brings true joy into territory that fear was certain it had won.
On my worst days, I used to try to silence anxious thoughts by sheer willpower. You cannot outmuscle anxiety. I had to choose to let God’s promises and His presence move into the battlefield of my mind.
When anxiety launches its assault today, you have a choice in tactics. You can fight in your own strength until you are utterly exhausted (been there, done that, it’s awful!) or you can open your heart and let God’s consoling presence come in. One of those leaves you depleted. The other lets the One who already secured the victory fight on your behalf.
Your anxiety may be great. But your God is greater. His consolation can walk straight into your most anxious moment and do what willpower never could: turn it into joy founded on His promises.
Prayer:
Father, anxiety has launched a full attack on my mind and heart today. My thoughts race as fear threatens to overwhelm me. I surrender this battlefield to You. Where worry has stormed the gates of my peace, send Your consolation in its place. Replace my racing thoughts with Your promises and my tension with Your presence. Thank You that I am not fighting alone, and that the victory is already Yours. I breathe in Your peace and breathe out my trust in You. Amen.
Today’s Battle Cry: Anxiety is great, but God’s love is greater. His consolation can turn my fear into joy.
