John 13:34-35

So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.

Jesus taught his disciples that they should be known for their love. He often quoted commandments from the Old Testament, including “Love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5) and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18). Jesus took these commandments one step further when he said we are to love others as he does. Throughout his life, Jesus modeled radical love by loving the morally corrupt and socially outcast, friends who had betrayed and abandoned him, and those who persecuted and crucified him. This kind of love will stand out in the world and prove that we are his disciples.
