In a Mirror, Dimly

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.

Corinth was a famous manufacturing center for mirrors. In Paul’s day, state-of-the-art mirrors were made of polished metal, silver, or brass. By gazing intently into the shiny metal, the viewer could have a general — if somewhat vague — impression of reality. But when you compared looking at someone’s reflection with seeing them face-to-face . . . well, there was no comparison. The reflection was at best a dim shadow of the full-blooded reality.

For now we see in a mirror, dimly. The word Paul used for “dimly” is the Greek term for “puzzle,” or “riddle,” or “enigma.” That’s what life is like, Paul was saying. Even for a Christian. It’s an inscrutable enigma. Yes, we have a general apprehension of reality for we have the Word of God and the Spirit of God to guide and teach us. We have “eyes of the heart” that are at least partially functional here on earth. But let’s face it — we are only catching the merest glimpse of the full, eternal reality in Christ. We find ourselves here on earth peering into an imperfect mirror, trying to make sense of it all. We come with our pain and sorrow and gaze and gaze, wanting so much to see the full picture. It seems that God only allows us enough of a glimpse to bring comfort and encouragement — he has shown us enough of life in the Spirit to embolden us to keep going!

What heart-cries still remain unsatisfied for you? What questions still remain unanswered? What yearnings remain unfulfilled? Remember that this life is only a dim reflection of the true reality yet to be revealed. Bring your heart-cries and questions and yearnings to the feet of Jesus. Let his Word shed light and meaning on your heartbreak . . . and leave the rest to faith.

Lord Jesus, help me to gaze and gaze upon you this day, for you hold the answers . . . you fulfill each longing . . . you are my satisfaction. Help me to see you clearly!
