You Are Right!

Should not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?

Genesis 18:25

You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You see the conduct of all people, and you give them what they deserve.

Jeremiah 32:19

The LORD is still there in the city, and he does no wrong.

Day by day he hands down justice, and he does not fail.

Zephaniah 3:5

There are three little words we love to hear people say to us: “You were right!” Somehow it satisfies that desire in us to be the smartest person in the room—the one who saw things clearly before anybody else did.

The opposite of the joy that comes from saying, “I was right!” is the agony of acknowledging, “I was wrong.” We all have to admit it at some point. But God never does. God is right all the time. He always does what is right.

The Bible uses the same word for righteousness (or rightness) as it does for justice. Justice is the righteous way God rules over every part of the universe. While human judges can’t help but be swayed by prejudices and limitations in their knowledge, God is a righteous judge. He can’t be anything other than perfectly just.

When the justice of God works its way into our understanding of the circumstances in our lives, we can stand back and say, “God, you were right. Everything you do is right.” But this is not what comes naturally to us. Because we don’t know God as well as we should, we’re more likely to point our fingers at God, accusing him of unfairness, questioning his timing, and doubting his love. But the more we know him, the more confidence we have in his justice. We can begin to say to him about everything he does, “You are right!”
