What Is God Made Of?

God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.

John 4:24

The person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.

1 Corinthians 6:17

Then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

Ecclesiastes 12:7

We often look on the packaging of food we buy to see the list of ingredients. We want to see what the food is made of. And we look at the labels on our clothes to see what kind of fibers have been woven into the fabric.

Have you ever wondered what God is made of? We know he doesn’t have a body of flesh and blood like we do. But what kind of matter or material forms his being? Is he just a ball of energy or merely an idea in people’s minds?

Jesus told us what God is made of. He is spirit. What does it mean that God is spirit? It means that he exists as a being that isn’t made of any matter; he has no parts or dimensions. We can’t detect him with our bodily senses, and he doesn’t have a size or shape. He is more excellent than any other kind of existence. His very being is unlike anything else in creation. Anything we try to compare him to falls short.

God is fully spirit and we are not, but he has still made us in his own image. God has given us spirits so we can worship him and unite with his spirit even while we’re here on earth. And when we die and go from this life into the presence of God, it is our spirits, not our bodies, that will return to God.
