The Promised One

Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people. He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago.

2 Corinthians 1:20

Have you ever had to wait for someone to fulfill a promise to you—a promise to take you somewhere or give you something or let you do something? It can be hard to wait for a promise to be fulfilled.

God made a promise to us. In fact, he has made many promises. But God’s most important promise—the promise all his other promises depend on—was that he would send his Son to save us from our sin. Many years and many generations passed before what God promised became a reality. The people he made the promise to had to wait, and waiting can be hard.

But waiting patiently for God to fulfill his promises is what it means to have faith. We don’t become Christians just by believing what God has done for us in the past through Jesus. Saving faith means putting all our hopes in what God is going to do for us in the future because of what Jesus accomplished on the Cross.

Putting your faith in God’s promises is not something you do one time on the day you become a Christian. The essence of being a Christian is placing all your hopes in the promises of God and being willing to wait, trusting that, “God’s way is perfect. All the LORD’s promises prove true” (Psalm 18:30).
