Secret Things

The LORD our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.

Deuteronomy 29:29

His disciples came and asked him, “Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?” He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge.

Matthew 13:10-12

God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure.

Ephesians 1:9

It can be fun to know a secret. When someone shares a secret with you, it’s like giving you a gift of something precious and important, and you feel special just for knowing.

God has secrets. And he doesn’t have to tell us his secrets. But because he loves us, he has chosen to reveal to us his most precious secret—his secret plan for us. Colossians 2:2 says that God’s secret plan is “Christ himself.” What makes this secret so significant is that it is not just a secret we know with our minds. It is a secret we experience and enter into. Colossians 1:27 says, “God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.”

God’s secret is Jesus himself living inside us, changing us, making us new, bringing us safely home to himself. But it’s not a secret anymore! God has entrusted his secret to us so that we can tell everyone who has not yet heard.
