Names You Should Never Forget

Names You Should Never Forget

The LORD is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you.

Psalm 9:9-10

The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.

Proverbs 18:10

Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.

Romans 10:13

When you meet someone new, is it easy for you to remember that person’s name? Or do you struggle to remember people’s names and then feel embarrassed when you forget?

God has many names for himself that he wants us to remember. Each of his names tells us something about who he is. And the more we remember them, the more precious he becomes to us—the more we see how he is able to provide for our every need.

When we are in need and God’s resources are at hand, we experience Yahweh-Yireh: the Lord provides (See Genesis 22:14). When we are sick and God brings relief, we experience Yahweh-Rophi: the Lord who heals (See Exodus 15:26). When we find ourselves in a spiritual battle and God gives us victory, we experience Yahweh-Nissi: the Lord our banner (See Exodus 17:15). When God gives us a desire for holiness, we experience Yahweh-M’Kaddesh: the Lord who sanctifies (See Exodus 31:13). When our anxiety is overcome by God’s peace, we experience Yahweh-Shalom: the Lord is peace (See Judges 6:24). When God gives us victory over any evil that threatens us, we experience Yahweh-Sabaoth: the Lord of hosts (See 1 Samuel 17:45). When God lovingly brings us back into the fold from our wanderings, we experience Yahweh-Rohi: the Lord my shepherd (See Psalm 23). When we accept the sinless perfection of Christ in place of our own sinfulness, we experience Yahweh-Tsidkenu: the Lord our righteousness (See Jeremiah 23:6). When we feel lonely and find God reaching out to us, we experience Yahweh-Shammah: the Lord who is there (See Ezekiel 48:35). We don’t want to forget God’s names! They each tell us something special about who God is and how he wants to give himself to us.
