Investment Advice

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Matthew 6:19-21

God said to him, “You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?”

Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.

Luke 12:20-22

Investment advice. Like most other kinds of advice, there are usually lots of people willing to offer it. Investment counselors point out the potential risks and rewards of various stocks, bonds, accounts, and businesses.

Jesus offered investment advice too. He said that we have a choice. We can live with a view toward accumulating things of value here on earth, which we will leave behind when we die. Or we can live with a view toward accumulating valuable things in heaven, which we will enjoy forever. He instructed us to “store your treasures in heaven.”

Jesus offers us sound investment advice—showing us how we can invest our lives in the cause of heaven. We can give out the gospel, send missionaries to hard places in the world, feed the hungry in the name of Jesus, take care of widows and orphans as the Bible instructs, translate the Bible into new languages, and train pastors to teach the Word. Jesus wants us to see that the only investments that will pay eternal dividends of joy are what we invest in the cause of Christ right now.

Sometimes we think of the money we give to God’s cause—or any other resource, such as time and energy—as a sacrifice. But Jesus helps us to see that it is the only investment that will follow us beyond the grave. Every other investment is something we’ll eventually let go of.
