God’s Mirror

When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the LORD. When Moses finished speaking with them, he covered his face with a veil.

Exodus 34:29, 33

Whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

2 Corinthians 3:16-18

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see someone who is growing up or growing old? Do you see in your reflection someone who is changing or simply staying the same?

Moses was someone whose face changed dramatically. He went up on Mount Sinai to be with God, and after he saw and experienced the glory of God on the mountain, the skin on his face literally glowed with God’s glory. When he came down from the mountain, the glory began to fade with each passing day.

But the glory doesn’t have to fade this way for us. We have something Moses didn’t have. We have the Holy Spirit living inside us—changing us from the inside. The Spirit of God is at work, making us into mirrors so we can clearly reflect the radiance and beauty of God’s glory.

We don’t want to stay the same spiritually. We want to change—not just on the outside, but on the inside. We want the Holy Spirit to take away everything in our lives that doesn’t look like Jesus. A year from now, if we are the same as we are today—if there has been no change in our character, no progress toward holiness, no development toward a clearer reflection of Jesus in our attitudes and actions—then something has gone wrong. God wants to change us, making us into better reflectors of him.
