God Knows

God is greater than our feelings, and he knows everything.

1 John 3:20

O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand!

Psalm 139:1-6

There used to be a commercial on television where a guy sitting in front of his computer screen gets this message: “You have now reached the end of the Internet.” We laugh at the thought of it because we can’t imagine ever coming to the point that we’ve seen everything there is to see on the Internet, let alone knowing everything that is there.

If the Internet is that vast, what does that say about the knowledge of God? Because God knows literally everything there is to know. Nothing has escaped him. God fully knows everything about himself and about all things in creation, not to mention all possible things, including events that might happen but don’t.

If God wanted to tell us how many grains of sand are on the seashore or how many stars are in the sky or how many hairs are on our heads, he wouldn’t have to count them quickly or compute the answer on some sort of massive computer. He doesn’t have to try to get his mind working to remember or do some calculations to come to any conclusions. He never learns anything new that he didn’t already know. And he never forgets anything.

Perhaps the most amazing part of God’s knowledge is his knowledge of us. He knows everything about us—how we think, what we want, where we’re headed. He knows our pasts as well as our futures. And he loves us.
