Does God Need Your Help?

He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.

Acts 17:24-25

Who has given me anything that I need to pay back? Everything under heaven is mine.

Job 41:11

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

Ephesians 1:5

A grandpa climbs up onto a tractor, and his granddaughter says, “Can I help drive?” He agrees, and she sits in his lap and “drives” the tractor. All the while it’s really his hands that are guiding the machinery. Her “help” actually makes the job more challenging, but because he loves her and she loves him, he invites her to join him in his work.

This is how it is with us and God. He doesn’t need our help. God is completely independent and self-sufficient. He has no needs and depends on no one. He doesn’t need helpers. But he stoops to work in and through his believing and obedient children anyway. He gives us the pleasure of joining him in his work in the world.

So what does he need from us? Companionship? People sometimes think God created human beings because he was lonely and needed fellowship. But God is not lonely. God the Father enjoys perfect fellowship with the Son and the Spirit. Knowing that God doesn’t need us, we might wonder if we’re important at all. But the truth is, God created us and determined that we would be meaningful to him. That’s the very definition of significance.

What part of God’s work in the world are you most excited about being involved in?

Jesus gave those who believe in him a commission to go into all the world and preach the gospel. Does he need us for that?

If God does not need us to work for him, keep him company, or defend him, then what is our purpose in the world?
