A Day Person or a Night Person?

God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

John 3:19

You are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. . . . Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk. But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.

1 Thessalonians 5:5, 7-8

Once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

Ephesians 5:8-9

Some people are night people. Their energy just gets going when the sun goes down, and they love to stay up late. Other people are morning people. They like to get up early and get things done and go to bed early for a good night’s sleep. The Bible talks about day people and night people. But it is not referring to their sleep habits. It is referring to whether or not they’ve embraced Jesus and the new way of living he brings.

Our culture is uncomfortable making a clear distinction between people when it comes to eternity. But according to Scripture, the world is divided into two kinds of people—night people and day people. And while we might not be able to identify who is who, God can. At the end of time, the people who have chosen darkness will enter into eternal darkness. And the people who have chosen light will enter into the eternal light of heaven, where “the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light” (Revelation 21:23). So are you a day person or a night person?

Is it possible for people of the light to get sucked into doing deeds of darkness? Can people who love darkness do the deeds of light?
