Treasured

The very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

“SO—WHAT ARE you going to do next?”

The question was posed innocently enough by a friend. I’d just finished describing my work volunteering with a women’s conference and meeting a challenging work deadline. I really wanted to say, “I just need to catch my breath.” But I didn’t. Instead, I rattled off yet another list of things that needed to be done.

I am a to-do list kind of person. I love the satisfaction of checking items off a list. And although there may be nothing wrong with valuing productivity—at least not on the surface—there can be a deeper need driving me. Too often, I can feel that in order to be valuable or make a mark on this world, to be seen and noticed or even sometimes loved, I must perform. Being is simply not enough.

This morning, I sat and listened to my daughter tell me about her weekend. She recounted a tumble she took yesterday, the food she ate last night, the fun she had with friends. As I listened to her talk, I thought about how much I love her. I love hearing her voice, her thoughts, her heart. There is nothing that she does that increases my love. There is nothing she does that diminishes my love. Simply hearing her voice and spending time with her is enough. I treasure her just as she is.

And isn’t that just how God thinks about us? Lovely, chosen, treasured, loved—just as we are. Not because of what we do. Our value to God does not diminish or increase based on what we accomplish. His love is always constant. He cares about the largest and smallest details of our lives, down to knowing the very hairs on our heads. He treasures us.

Lord, thank you for being such a good God. Thank you that you treasure us because of who we are and not because of what we can do for you. Amen.
