Sure
Sure
I know that nothing can keep us from the love of God. Death cannot! Life cannot! Angels cannot! Leaders cannot! Any other power cannot! Hard things now or in the future cannot! The world above or the world below cannot! Any other living thing cannot keep us away from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord.
RECENTLY, events around the world have caused an upheaval of our routines and threatened our sense of security. I’ve seen people clinging to any and every piece of information, looking for things that they can believe are sure. I understand why they would do this. It makes us feel safe when we think we fully understand what is happening to us.
As we’ve walked through this season, I’ve tried to resist this pressing urge to find out answers to everything. I’ve thought a lot about my sister who passed away at twenty-eight from breast cancer, leaving two small children and a husband behind. In the fifteen years since her death, I’ve often tried to figure out the why behind how it could happen, and if I’m honest, I’ve yet to find an answer. So instead, I started asking myself about God and what I knew to be true about him.
In the present situation, I began to ask myself the same thing: What do I know about God that is sure, even when life is not? Because no matter what I’m facing in life, this answer never changes. God is love. He is kind. He is near. And maybe most important: nothing, in all of eternity, will separate us from his love.
There are many things in life that will remain without answers, but who God is and his love for us remains sure, always. This I will cling to when life gets hard, when circumstances come along that are out of my control, or when the answers I’ve been hoping for simply aren’t there. This life is full of uncertainty, but God’s love for us is always certain.
Lord, when I don’t find the answers to the questions I have in life, help me to instead lean into the promises of who you are. Help me remember that, in all things, your love for me is constant. Amen.
